How much can you fit in one lunchbox?

Post image for How much can you fit in one lunchbox?

I packed her lunch that morning, water bottle, red apple, tub of grapes, ABC Muffin, packet of popcorn and a vegemite sandwich. Will it be enough I wonder?

At pick up time she leaves the classroom, hair ruffled and clothes bedraggled after a hard days learning and playing. “I’m hungry, do you have food?” she asks, I say hello.

The next day I pack her water bottle, a frozen yogurt, carrot, banana, two chocolate chip biscuits and a cheese and bacon roll.

At pick up time she wanders out of the classroom, hugs me hello and says “I din’t have enough to eat, do you have food?”

The day following I pack her water bottle, a frozen yogurt, carrot, red apple, banana, hot cross bun and a vegemite sandwich.

At pick up time she comes out of the classroom, I can hear her tummy rumbling from where I’m standing. A bag of afternoon tea snacks is already in my hand before she asks.

Trying again the day after I pack her water bottle, frozen yogurt, carrot, red apple, 2 slices of left over pizza and a vegemite sandwich.

I go in to school at lunch time, she is eating everything herself and it is all demolished, practically inhaled she is so hungry.

And thusly back to the lunch time jigsaw puzzle I go, how much food CAN I fit into one lunch box?

Note: Heidi is on 92nd percentile for height and only 67th percentile for weight. I can only assume all that food goes into growing her taller and taller and taller.

I know just what you mean. Mine went with extras today that I couldn’t fit in their lunch boxes.

I like lunch order days, because I can at least order extra food that wont be squished into the lunch box.

i tend to say consider yourself lucky. Nemo often struggles to eat in the environment of school. on days were he barely touches his lunch, he will have bad afternoons in class, understandibly. the teacher knows now and tries to supervise or also proposes him to take a break in class and get back on his lunchbox.
it’s a bit better this year, and we had good days so far.
i still only fill half of a rather small lunchbox as otherwise it just gets thrown out or comes back in crumbles…

We had help from an OT working on the food aspect of Heidi’s sensory diet since she was 3yo. So I know what food to pack that will help calm her senses whilst stimulating her mind… note the abundance of crunchy foods and proteins.

Also those squeezing yogurt tubes are great for some calming chewing. I had purchased reusable squeezy yogurt packs, but then realised that Heidi chews on them to calm herself, so it is better to purchase these once off use yogurt packets.

lol Monster is the only child here who eats ALL THE FOODS in their lunchbox (and also says he’s hungry when I pick him up). The others want food after school too, but they usually haven’t eaten everything in their lunchbox.

It’s always good to have snacks on hand, though. For the kids of course, not for me or anything *cough*.

I never know how much to pack but this year my fastly growing child is eating everything, even the crust which she hates. I barely need to clean the lunchbox it is so empty! And she refuses to go to the canteen to even get an icy pole on hot days because the line is too long and it gets in the way of playing. Active kids seem to get through a lot of food, but I know she is eating enough for lunch and really afternoon tea is not all that far away.

Sandwich crusts are my touchstone, if the crusts come home then I know she has really had enough food.

Not once so far this school year have crusts come home, which means she was hungry enough to eat them

My boy has requested that a tin of beans go to school with him, along with an overflowing lunch box. So glad he loves to eat beans straight from the tin!
